Almost Awake

Almost Awake has an official biography (which you can find in the press and booking secion). It's written in the third person, as all good press-kit bios should be. But this is not a press kit. This is our website, where I have the opportunity to tell you about the band that is, and the people that make up, Almost Awake.

I, if you have not guessed, am Casey J. Chapman: singer, songwriter, guitarist and webmistress. Dave Shaver is the other half of the duo. Fans of drumming would probably say he's the better half! He plays the djembe like no one you've ever seen, sings beautiful backing vocals, helps arrange the songs and is in charge of the myspace page. He also speaks to people when i'm being an aloof 'artiste'.

We first started playing together in the summer of 2005. It was a defining moment in both our lives. We met at an open mic. in Troy, NY and Dave joined me at my next few shows as a guest before we officially became a band.

A few weeks after we started playing together, Dave moved downstate to attend Purchase College Conservatory of Music. We had so many shows, however, that is soon became clear he had to make a choice. Luckily for me, the band, and fans of original acoustic music everywhere, Dave chose Almost Awake!

Since then, the band has been through ups and downs. We've played venues as large as Green Mountain College and as small as a streetcorner in Greenwich. We've played in five states, released two albums and lived as full-time musicians. We've also played venues where no one cared, been mad at each other, taken time off and made the difficult choice to get day jobs.

Our music has evolved. What started as melancholy acoustic ballads accompanied by djembe have become a repertoire of songs in a wide range of styles that are truly a collaboration between two people.

I don't know how to properly describe our music. It's not that I think it's indescribable, I'm just too close to it to get a good, overall look. I'll ask Dave and get back to you. . .
